Obituary for Mary Teola Sutherland (Richardson)

M. Teola Sutherland, 90, of Florence died Saturday, October 7, 2017, at Mitchell-Hollingsworth Nursing and Rehab Center.

Visitation will be Friday, October 13, 2017, 11 AM to 1 PM at Elkins Funeral Home. Funeral services will follow at 1PM in the Chapel with Bro. Barrett Long and Bro. Kevin Johnson officiating. Burial will be private.

Mrs. Sutherland was a 1945 graduate of Coffee High School. She was a cashier for 35 years with Kroger’s. She was a lifelong member of Central Baptist Church, Sunday school teacher, great hostess for Sunday school parties. She loved playing BINGO, cards, and especially playing practical jokes on family and friends.

Mrs. Sutherland was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, John Thomas Sutherland; parents, Henry Burma and Flora Elaine Richardson; brother, Hobson Richardson; sisters, Eddis Pounders and Burma Dean Kennedy.

Mrs. Sutherland is survived by her son, John Sutherland, Jr. (Carol Nell); daughter, Mae Austin (Harry); special sister-in-law/daughter, Wanda Sutherland Barker (Hairell); grandchildren, Caroline Owens (Chuck) of Raleigh, NC, Elizabeth Ziemer (Chris) of St. Paul, MN, and Andrew Sutherland of Florence, AL; great-grandchildren, Jacob Sparks, Luke Sutherland, Gracie, Abby, Maggie, and Callie Owens, Connor McCord, Emma and Elise Ziemer; numerous nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be Andrew Sutherland, Jacob Sparks, Danny Richardson, Terry Richardson, Dennis Smith, and Dennis DeFoor. Honorary pallbearers will be great-grandsons and nephews.

Special thanks to Mitchell-Hollingsworth, Station 4, and Dr. Lyman Mitchell.
