Obituary for Carlton Howell Hughes

Carlton Howell Hughes, 91, of Florence, Alabama passed away on January 14, 2018. DUE TO INCLEMENT WEATHER, VISITATION AND SERVICES HAVE BEEN CHANGED FROM TODAY (Tues, Jan 16) New Visitation will be Thursday, January 18, 2018, from 11 AM to 2 PM at Elkins Funeral Home. The service will follow at 2 PM in the Chapel with Rev. Scott Coats officiating. Burial will be at Tri-Cities Memorial Gardens.



Carlton Howell Hughes, 91, of Florence, Alabama passed away on January 14, 2018, at the Floyd E. “Tut” Fann Veterans Home in Huntsville, Alabama.
Visitation will be Thursday, January 18, 2018, from 11 AM to 2 PM at Elkins Funeral Home. The service will follow at 2 PM in the Chapel with Rev. Scott Coats officiating. Burial will be at Tri-Cities Memorial Gardens.
Carlton was born on November 12, 1926, in Red Bay, Alabama. While in high school, his family moved to Florence where he graduated from Coffee High School and briefly attended Florence State College until he joined the U.S. Navy during WWII. He served on the USS Boxer aircraft carrier as radio operator. After the war, he began working for the U.S. Postal Service in Florence and retired as Superintendent of Mail. After retiring from the postal service he worked a number of years as a sales representative for Martin Supply Company in Sheffield, Alabama. Carlton loved the game of golf and made many friendships while a member of the Florence Golf and County Club. He was a friendly man with a loving personality and enjoyed making people laugh. He was a member of Northwood Methodist Church, Florence, Alabama.
Carlton is survived by his wife, Martha, of 71 years; daughters, Connie Moore (Paul) and Carla Flannagin (Phillip); grandchildren, Matt Wiginton (Stacy), Todd Wiginton (Karen), Jennifer Flannagin McCurry (Wes), and Caroline Flannagin McCoy (Loren); great-grandchildren, Sara Jennifer and Memphis Wiginton, Eleanor and Ruth Wiginton, Lilly Kate and Cole Collins, Gray and Will McCoy.
Carlton was preceded in death by his mother, Pearl Howell Clark and his father, Johnny Hughes.
Pallbearers will be Wes McCurry, Dr. Loren McCoy, Bill Farris, Jr., Todd Wiginton, Paul Moore, and Phillip Flannagin. Honorary pallbearers will be Bill Farris, Sr., Terry McMinn, Jimmy Fago, and Hollis Wilson.
