Obituary for Vesta Carrel Daniel

Vesta Carrel Daniel of Florence, died Friday, December 16, 2016, at his residence.

A celebration of Mr. Daniel life will be announced at a later date. Elkins Funeral Home is assisting the family.

Mr. Daniel was born September 2, 1935 in Limestone County, Alabama to Walter Guy and Evelyn Hillis Daniel. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 51 years, Martha Jo Daniel; son, Joseph Carrel Daniel; brother, Terry Daniel; sister-in-law, Joyce Daniel.

Mr. Daniel is survived by one son, David Daniel of Nashville, Tennessee; two grandchildren, Rufus Daniel and Emmy Daniel both of Sarasota, Florida; sister, Jenny Weatherford (Mike) of Athens, Alabama; two brothers, Richard Garth Daniel of Dorville, Georgia and Jerry Daniel (Tillie) of Athens, Alabama; numerous nieces and nephews.

Carrel graduated from Athens High School in 1954. There he excelled in academics (National Honor Society), football, baseball, and track. He was all Tennessee Valley Conference 2nd all state in football and track. He earned a football scholarship to the University of Alabama. He remained at UA for two years and transferred to the University of North Alabama. At UNA Carrel was captain of the football team during his senior year in 1957 which was coached by the legendary Hal Self. Carrel graduated from UNA in 1958 with a degree in Business Administration. He was inducted to the Athens/Limestone sports Hall of Fame in 2014.

Carrel was the original owner/operator of Dale’s Restaurant in Florence which was one of the finest restaurants in the South for 35 years.

Carrel was a booster/supporter of the UNA Lions throughout the years until his recent retirement, illness, and death. He was a member of the Christian Church.

He will be sorely missed by his family, community, and friends throughout North Alabama.
