Obituary for Leon A. McCrary

Leon A. McCrary age 94 of Florence, Alabama went to be with the Lord Monday, October 23, 2017.

He was born in Anderson, Alabama, October 11, 1923 to Homer and Oshia McCrary.

He was a 1942 graduate of Lauderdale County High School; a WWII veteran with 35 air combat missions in a B-17 Bomber in the European Theatre with the 401st Bomb Group 8th Air Force. After the war he married Dorothy Nesmith of Anderson, Alabama. He graduated from Florence State Teachers College where he was awarded the Keller Key for achieving the highest grade point average in his class. He also played on the college baseball team. He retired as a Vice President of Electrode Corp., a division of Diamond Shamrock and worked for them in Alabama, Texas, Ohio, and Delaware. During his work he traveled around the world where he met and became friends with many people. He was an avid golfer, enjoyed square dancing, and reading.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Homer and Oshia Wade McCrary; wife, Dorothy Nesmith McCrary; brother, Edward McCrary; sister, Mildred Hammond.

Mr. McCrary is survived by his children, Linda Mesa (Ken), Bob McCrary (Alison), Marilyn Saxton (Bill), John McCrary (Patty), and Mike McCrary (Carie); 9 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; sisters, Millinea Hammond Byram, Virginia Tomlinson, and Joyce Tomlinson.

Visitation will be at Elkins East Chapel on Thursday, October 26, 2017, from 12-2 P.M. Funeral services will follow at 2:00 P.M. in the Chapel with Rev. Chris Underwood officiating. Burial will be at Mitchell Cemetery in Anderson, Alabama.
